INSIGHT System to be deployed in major US DOD prosthetics study

Adapttech technology to be deployed in US Department of Defense study to improve clinical outcomes for patients receiving prosthetic care

BIRMINGHAM, UK – October 4, 2022 – Biomedical startup Adapttech today announced that its INSIGHT System technology is to be used in a collaborative study between WillowWood, US Department of Defense, The Ohio State University and Adapttech Inc, to improve clinical outcomes for patients receiving prosthetic care.

The WillowWood research team has been awarded a $1.4 million grant from the DoD to investigate how socket shapes affect residual limb pressures and the resultant limb health. The results of this clinical trial may change prosthetic socket design and fitting through the inclusion of patient-centric objective data and the identification of critical fit parameters.

“This project will expand upon our ongoing successful collaborations with The Ohio State University that were the first to quantitively measure changes in limb health in response to suspension. This work will continue to enrich our understanding of the conditions that promote skin tissue health within the industry.  We are excited to welcome Adapttech into our collaborative team and leverage their expertise to address this knowledge gap.” said Matthew Wernke PhD, Research and Development Manager of WillowWood and project Principal Investigator.

Commenting on the research collaboration, Frederico Carpinteiro, CEO Adapttech and Adapttech Lead Investigator said: “The clinical impact of our INSIGHT System technologies continues to grow. This collaboration with WillowWood and The Ohio State University provides a great opportunity to further demonstrate the power of the information we provide to ensure patient comfort and fit, which benefits everyone in the care pathway.”

The announcement of this seven-figure grant comes on the back of earlier collaboration announcements from Adapttech; the company signed licensing deals with Modus Health for their StepWatch™ step-count software, the University of Washington for the Prosthetic Limb Users Survey of Mobility (PLUS-M™) self-reporting tool, and Advanced Rehabilitation Therapy for the Amputee Mobility Predictors (AMPPro / AMPnoPro). These leading measurement tools will be incorporated into future product designs and patient outcome models.

“Our decade long collaboration with WillowWood has not only resulted in product offerings and novel scientific outcomes, but also created excellent opportunities for our researchers and students to apply their expertise to the clinical setting.  We are excited to once again address a clinical need that will advance prosthetic care for patients.” added Heather Powell PhD, Professor and The Ohio State University Lead Investigator for the project.

The U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity, 820 Chandler Street, Fort Detrick MD 21702-5014 is the awarding and administering acquisition office.  This work is supported by The Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs endorsed by the Department of Defense, through the Orthotics and Prosthetics Outcomes Research Program, under Award No. W81XWH-22-1-0469. Opinions, interpretations, conclusions and recommendations are those of the author and are not necessarily endorsed by the Department of Defense.
